Match reports

Capel Dewi Vs Aberporth, 5th October, 2009

Capel Dewi 0, Aberporth 8

The singles went smoothly for Aberporth, once the visiting bowler settled to the mat, ending 19-7 in his favour.

Aberporths' pairs were equally strong and steamed to a resounding 18-3 victory.

Capel Dewi faired better with their triples, giving the visitors a good match. Unfortunately, they dropped a 5 on the 8th end, when a forcing shot took their best wood out, and had to watch the game continue to slip away from them, ending 13-4 down.

The rinks was the tightest of the games, with the visitors rarely more than a point or two ahead. The visitors managed to open a 4 point lead going in to the last end and, keeping their collective nerve, went on to win 13-7.

Aberporth Vs Dolphins, 15th October, 2009

Aberporth 6, Dolphins 2

The home derby, Aberporth v Dolphins, game was a tightly fought contest with the result giving the impression that Aberporth overawed their club-mates, but the play did not show that at all. In many other clubs, they would have run out of chalk as both teams constantly moved the jack around. However in the end it was normally Aberporth who took the points, except in the rinks when the Dolphins four led for much of the game and held off the late challenge to win their valued two points, however this marked the end of a run of eleven games for the Dolphins without defeat.

Llandygwydd Vs Aberporth, 22nd October, 2009

Llandygwydd 4, Aberporth 4

Llandygwydd had the unenviable task of taking what they could from their visitors. The drawn result was in reality a good result for Llandygwydd, knowing the aspirations of their visitors.

Aberporth Vs Llechryd, 29th October, 2009

Aberporth 6, Llechryd 2

The singles was a tough match. The score of 13-5 in favour of Aberporth belies how well Bill played for Llechryd.

The pairs was a similar affair, with the home team coming out 15-7 on top.

The triples went all Aberporths' way, despite some cracking shots from Llechryds' skip, Elaine. 15-4 was a good result but the Visitors deserved better.

The home rinks team was not so successful. Even when they were touching the jack, so were the visitors! Llechryd were justly rewarded in this game with their 7-3 win.

Aberporth Vs Manordeifi, 5th November, 2009

Aberporth 5, Manordeifi 3

The singles was a cliff-hanger from start to finish, with Steve leading all the way to the last end. At 9-6 up, it looked like a foregone conclusion. After putting the first wood in the ditch, Paul managed to steal the jack for 2 with one wood left each. Steve bowled slightly wide leaving Paul with a no pressure shot (huh!) that mustn't move the jack. He held his nerve and drew in for a third wood, ending the game in a draw.

In the pairs, Cory and Emyr proved unmovable and romped home to a strong win.

The triples started well for Aberporth, too. They maintained the pressure throughout the game and, despite a rally by the visitors on the ninth end, went on to win 13-6.

Manordiefi started well in the rinks with a 3 on the first end. Unfortunately, they then gave away 4 on the second end. Would that it had stayed that way! Manordiefi then took 7 on the next with Aberporths' nearest wood about 2 feet away. Another 4 on the next end took the visitors to 14-4 up from which Aberporth never recovered.

Aberporth would have hoped for 6-2, or better, on their own mats, but Manordeifi showed that they can be formidable opponents, thoroughly deserving their 3 points.

Aberporth Vs Orllwyn 13.11.2009

Aberporth 8, Orllwyn 0

The singles was a good tussle, but was never in doubt for Aberporth, ending 13-7 in their favour. The pairs was an equal success for the home team who won 15-4. Not to be outdone, Aberporth triples took their game 13-6.

In the rinks, the game was much closer, but the home team proved too strong going on to win 13-4.

Mydroilin Vs Aberporth 20.11.2009

Mydroilin 2, Aberporth 6

The singles and pairs were all won comfortably by Aberporth. Indeed, the visitors dropped very few shots in these games.

Mydroilin did not give up the triples without a fight. Although the visitors won the match by a reasonable margin, it was still all to play for right up to the last wood on the last end.

The rinks was an altogether different affair. The visitors struggled to acquire the mat and were consistently outplayed. The mat was not the only consideration; credit must also go to some good play by the home team. Particularly, it is worth mentioning Mydroilin's youngest player, Jake Fletcher, who played lead in the rinks. It must be daunting to be playing alongside adults, many of whom exude confidence. Jake kept his nerve and played well. He was regularly on or near the jack and had very few shots that were off target. He is clearly an asset to his team and will develop in to a first-rate player.

Aberporth Vs Penrhiwllan 26.11.2009

Aberporth 7, Penrhiwllan 1

Richard Bartlett very nearly upset Paul Edwards' record, taking an early lead and refusing to relinquish it until well into the game. At 7 all going in to the last end, it was all to play for. The jack moved back and forth between them and, with one wood each left to bowl, ended up virtually dead centre between opposing woods. Richard played with weight to take Paul's wood off the mat, but sailed on through. Paul, not wanting to rely on a measure, tried to draw but was short. Luckily, the measure went his way, giving him the game 8-7.

Aberporth had the edge all through the pairs game, not that the ends weren't close. They went on to win 11-5.

In the triples, the game was won on the last end by Aberporth, taking it 11-8. There was a little excitement on the way: the visitors' skip killed 2 ends, so the home team were hoping he might do it again and save them the bother of winning ends!

The rinks was much tougher, with the visitors 9-6 up going in to the last end. Penrhiwllan's skip, Peter, played a brilliant final wood, nestling in to reduce the home team's four shot advantage to one shot. Jonathan, playing skip for Aberporth, played the jack through just far enough to steal three for a draw. Celebrations for his 18th birthday the next day started early!

Pencnwc Vs Aberporth 03.12.2009

Pencnwc 2, Aberporth 6

The singles was a reasonably close game, with the first few ends evenly shared. Aberporth started to pull away and, despite a valiant effort from the home player, went on to win by a comfortable margin.

The pairs was much more a one-sided affair, with the visitors dominating from the start and going on to win by a wide margin.

In the triples, the game could have gone either way and was decided on a measure on the last end. Aberporth played well, and will be relieved to have secured these two points as well.

The rinks was quite another thing. With excellent play from the home second and third, well supported by some superb shots from their skip, the visitors could only look on as the game slipped away from them. Pencnwc truly dominated the game.

Aberporth Vs Rhydlewis (The battle of the titans!) 07.12.2009

Aberporth 6, Rhydlewis 2

In the singles, the home advantage seemed to elude Paul as Medwyn steamed to a solid victory.

The pairs was much more of a tussle, the home pair just managing to take the points.

The triples was very much a stroll in the park for Aberporth as the 14-5 scoreline testified.

The home team started well in the rinks, too, leading 11-0 at one stage. Rhydlewis staged a formidable come back, needing 5 off the last end for a draw. Aberporth played it canny, placing a good second wood and another close by, making a large score very unlikely. Robert ploughed in with weight, nudging the Aberporth woods aside, leaving them holding the necessary 5! Luckily, Brian managed to squeeze and extra wood in with the last shot to cut them down to 2, thereby taking the game.

Aberporth Vs Llandygwydd, 04.02.10

Aberporth 8, Llandygwydd 0

The singles went comfortably Aberporth's way, as did the doubles. This is not to say that the visitors were not playing well, just that the home team had the advantage of knowing their mats well and capitalised on it.

In the triples and rinks, the games were much closer. Aberporth had opened a reasonable lead in both games, but, even on the last end, Llandygwydd could have closed the gap.

Aberporth deserved their 8 - 0 win, but would have to applaud Llandygwydd for their valient efforts and the quality of their play.

Aberporth Vs Pencnwc, 18.03.10

The singles and pairs went comfortably Aberporth's way which, as it turned out, was sufficient to secure the league winners' position for the 2009 - 2010 season.

The home triples were not so lucky. They were building good heads, only to have them broken apart by Norma and John, playing 2nd and skip for Pencnwc. The game was close, with the visitors bagging a deserved two points.

The rinks was also a tough game, but Aberporth were not to be denied their moment of glory. They forged ahead with a narrow margin and managed to hold on to it, despite some spirited play from Bob, the Pencnwc skip.

With the 6 - 2 victory, Aberporth chalks up its 21st win in 23 games, beaten only once by..................I forget who!
